My Skirt Dyed!

My favorite skirt had a stain on the front of it--of course it had to be my FAVORITE skirt....  I had success soaking out the banana stain from my FAVORITE pants in Oxyclean just before I was ready to toss them and .... the stain came out and I was so impressed and happy.  I decided to soak the beige skirt to get out the stain and the process wasn't nearly as successful as with the pants.  In fact, it made matters worse.  The stain was removed but in its place were light spots and faded colors.

So I asked around and people suggested that I dye the skirt though no one offered to do it for me. I have never dyed anything before.  We went to El Centro and tried to find some tan dye but after looking in several different fabric stores, we felt lucky to find a dark brown color.

It only took a month or two to work up the nerve to give it a try but one morning I woke up and realized that I didn't like the skirt as it was and wouldn't wear it again...and it was time to try my hand at dying something.  People did it all the time...right?

We bravely followed the directions on the package and poured the dye into boiling water to dissolve the crystals and then poured the coloring into a pan big enough to hold the skirt.  Then it was time to bravely put the skirt in the dye. .

I stood there and stirred my skirt in the boiling dye for 45 minutes...hoping the skirt would be colored evenly...

The next step was to rinse it under running water.

It is a lot darker than I had before BUT it is colored a nice even dark brown and very usable again <whew>.

  1. Awesome! It looks great! I recently dyed our very light purple double stroller a nice navy blue. You are right - it is a brave thing to try with awesome results (most of the time)!
